Global Crossing Expands Undersea Cable Transport Capacity

Business News AmericasBusiness News Americas

International connectivity provider Global Crossing (Nasdaq: GLBC) has expanded capacity on its South American Crossing (SAC) undersea fiber optic cable system to meet increasing demand for IP and Ethernet transport in Central and South America, the company said in a statement.

The company has added 100Gbps of transport capacity to its submarine cable system and has also added new terminal equipment.

"Our carrier and service provider customers are requesting increased capacity to handle the huge demand for IP connectivity and broadband services, including emerging services such as IPTV and mobile broadband," Global Crossing CEO John Legere said.

Last year, Global Crossing completed its acquisition of Latin American regional corporate services provider Impsat for US$347mn. According to Legere, this acquisition brought a significant number of new customers to the company, resulting in the need to expand capacity.

Global Crossing's Latin American business has operations in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Panama, Peru, Mexico and Venezuela. In addition to its IP-based fiber optic network, Global Crossing's regional infrastructure includes 15 metropolitan networks and 15 world-class data centers located in the main business centers of Latin America.
