Sun Microsystems and Global Crossing Boost the Adoption of Software as a Service through Business Alliance
Buenos Aires, Argentina - September 24, 2009 -- Sun Microsystems, Inc. (NASDAQ: JAVA) today announced the implementation of a strategic alliance with leading global IP solutions provider Global Crossing Limited (NASDAQ: GLBC) to enable Independent Software Vendors (ISVs) to commercialize highly-reliable and high-yield service applications in the marketplaces of the Andean, Caribbean and Central America regions (Sun ACC).
Under a joint commercialization model, Sun contributed higher processing capacity to Global Crossing Limited Argentina's IT infrastructure through new Sun servers based on UltraSPARC® and AMD Opteron™ processors. This enables software vendors to deliver applications and tools under subscription or software as a service (SaaS) models.
"In critical times to our economies in the region, efficient cost-structure management is a must. ISVs require solutions that allow them to develop and deliver the best software without investing their limited resources in infrastructure," said Gustavo Sorgente, general director of Sun Microsystems for the Andean, Caribbean and Central America Regions (ACC). "With this agreement, we offer a better alternative to our customers, allowing them to focus on the development of relevant solutions to their marketplaces without incurring high operating costs."
The agreement between Sun and Global Crossing for the ACC Region is part of a global initiative known as Sun Solaris On Demand Program. Its objective is to assist ISVs in their evolution towards a SaaS distribution platform for their value-added applications and products.
Through its available hardware infrastructure platforms, Sun Microsystems is bringing leading edge technology servers to Global Crossing's data center in Argentina, one of 17 the company has around the world. Global Crossing's data center services can be used by ISVs throughout Latin America, allowing them to deliver top-notch services in their markets without the cost of infrastructure ownership or network operations management.
"Software development vendors in our region need sophisticated IT and communications solutions, with high levels of security and availability, to operate effectively in highly competitive markets," emphasized Leonardo Barbero, senior vice president of products and marketing for Global Crossing Latin America.
"In order to implement and maintain this kind of solution, high-quality technological infrastructure and specialized resources are required in a wide range of disciplines: storage, security, communications, databases, operating systems, just to mention a few. For several companies, facing this kind of project with their own resources is unfeasible from a financial and structural perspective. Therefore, that an ISV can offer its customers access to these features through a monthly subscription per user is an excellent alternative," continued Barbero.
Although initially implemented for software vendors, this management model is available to Sun's and Global Crossing's entire customer spectrum.
"This value proposition is attractive to any company facing an expansion project," said Marcela Cueli, product marketing manager for Global Crossing Latin America. "It assures high levels of availability, security, scalability and connectivity for those seeking to expand their service portfolios as well as those trying to expand their market through customized ITC solutions for their industries."
The Sun Microsystems and Global Crossing strategic alliance gives ISVs the necessary hosting technology and services to deliver successfully the solutions required by their customers through platforms that leverage their business models' effectiveness.
"At Sun we are committed to fulfilling this kind of strategic alliance to deliver state-of-the-art capabilities to our customers, improving their production economies through initiatives like the Sun Solaris on Demand Program," said María Victoria Valls, Sun Microsystems' alliance manager.
Global Crossing's growing data center footprint currently offers collocation facilities in 60 major cities around the world, and 17 world-class data centers - principally in Latin America with new additions in the United States, United Kingdom and Europe -- that are focused on managed services.
