Brazilian Carrier Algar Telecom Expands Contract With Global Crossing
Global Crossing IP Transit Services Will Help Meet Algar Telecom's Growing Demand for IP Services
São Paulo, Brazil - March 10, 2009 -- Global Crossing (NASDAQ: GLBC), a leading global IP solutions provider, today announced that Algar Telecom has expanded its contract with the company to meet the continuing strong growth of IP services in the Brazilian corporate and residential markets. Under the terms of the agreement, signed in September 2008, Global Crossing will provide multiple gigabit IP Transit service for an additional five years to accommodate the growing demand for services such as broadband Internet connectivity, peer-to-peer connectivity, streaming media and rich online content.
"Algar Telecom has selected a partner that is able to meet our requirements for high performance, security, continuity and growth," said Marcelo Almeida Nunes, New Business and Regulatory Division Coordinator at Algar Telecom.
Algar Telecom, a Global Crossing customer since 2006, was the first carrier customer in Brazil to adopt IP Transit services, such as GigaEthernet (Gig-E) Supercore high-speed service that is provided over the company's IP-based MPLS fiber-optic network. Currently, Algar Telecom provides services in the states of Minas Gerais, São Paulo, Distrito Federal, Rio de Janeiro, Goiás, Mato Grosso do Sul and Paraná.
"Our long-standing relationship with Algar Telecom demonstrates that as Brazil becomes a more mature market and users look for a superior experience, it is crucial to be able to rely on a provider who is ready to support not only the current growth, but also the future demand for IP services," said Marcos Martin Costa, carrier sales director at Global Crossing in Brazil.
Global Crossing's IP Transit service offers congestion-free, high-performance capabilities with global reach. As a Tier 1 Internet Service Provider (ISP) with extensive private peering relationships, Global Crossing provides direct links to many of the largest Internet content sites, using high-speed connectivity, ranging from T1/E1 to 10GigE.
